Maybe Pot stocks will hold their ground at these new low levels

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, March 26, edition that alcohol and cannabis are two things consumers cannot seem to go without, even in the midst of a global pandemic and a halted economy. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that the newly legal marijuana industry has never weathered an economic downturn, so the industry was not entirely sure how it would perform in one. A survey of 1,005 United States consumers by MKM Partners found that demand for pot appears to be just as inelastic as demand for alcohol. When asked whether they were spending more or less on various discretionary categories as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, media, alcohol and cannabis were the categories that showed the highest indications of spending.

QE, to infinity and beyond

Fed announced unlimited QE

The Federal Reserve announced a barrage of new programs to help keep the market functioning.

Among the moves is an open-ended commitment to keep buying assets under its quantitative easing measures.

There are multiple other programs, including one for Main Street business lending and others aimed at keeping credit flowing.

The Fed will be moving for the first time into corporate bonds, purchasing the investment-grade securities in primary and secondary markets and through exchange-traded funds.

Around 70M to 150M people in the U.S. will become infected with COVID-19, according to Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending physician of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. The Fed is raising the maximum offering of its daily operations in the repo market to $175B (from $150B) through mid-April, while the NBA announced it will suspend the season until further notice.

More QE on the way

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said today it will increase the amount of very short-term loans it has been offering to money markets amid a widening market rout.

The Fed had been slowly reducing its lending in a key short-term financing market for repurchase, or repo, agreements, in which the Fed lends cash overnight or for two weeks, accepting government bonds or mortgage-backed securities as collateral.

This pic says it all.

The Dow plunged 1,191 points on Thursday, marking the worst one-day point drop in the index’s history. In Canada, the TSX was down 325 points, or 1.9 per cent, when technical issues caused trading to come to a sudden halt
